Travel Bug in Dubai: Dune bashing

Posted on January 8, 2012

So what exactly is dune bashing? Otherwise known as desert safari (dune bashing using 4×4) ,  is exploring sand dunes using an off-road vehicle. This is a booming attraction for tourists in the Middle East, specially in Dubai. Other ways to do dune bashing in Dubai are riding bikes and skateboarding.

I love to travel but i am not a super explorer. I mean to try things like dune bashing, i would think twice. Until a friend booked me for dune bashing with 2 of my other friends. So I said, why not? I can be dizzy for few hours and “kalas”.

So the Travel Bug, (that’s me) was both excited and a little scared when the tourist company picked us up in Umm Suqeim. When we reached the area, we saw other 4×4 ‘s lined up in the desert. We started the journey in a single file, with  a smooth beginning, and there after followed by many twists, riding up and down the heaps of sand in the desert, climbing dune mountains. It was a great experience,  i am glad i’m no longer a  scary dizzy bug. Here are some notes and reminders about my dune bashing in the UAE:

1.  You can book for desert safari and tour operator will come to your hotel or to a place you requested at around 1:30 ish or 2:00 pm. There is about 45mins-1hr drive to the meeting point. Take note you will be taking the desert safari in group of vehicles, this makes it more safe and more fun.

2. Desert safari rates varies, from 150 AED (around 40 USD) for adults, some offers barbeque and different activities after dune bashing in such case rates may go up to 100 USD.  Other companies give 75% discount for for kids 3-8 years old.

3. Normally 6 passengers including the driver are allowed in a 4×4, so if you are more than 5, extra person needs to join other tourists in other vehicles.

4. In my own opinion, drinking too much water and eating heavy before dune bashing is not a good idea.

5. If you are comfortable in driving the desert by yourself,  you can rent a good vehicle of your choice by booking from your hotel. You can enjoy dune bashing in an area from Dubai going to Abu Dhabi,  Liwa desert or Hatta near southern Dubai.

After our desert safari, all vehicles went to a desert camp site, details on my next post about Travel Bug in Dubai.
